PHASE 1: ENGAGE

Make CONNECTIONS

Every roll begins here.
Phase 1 is about how grappling starts — whether standing, sitting, or engaging with an opponent in front of you.
The goal isn’t necessarily to attack yet —
it’s to connect in a way that gives you control over the distance, balance, and the initial grips or frames.
Do you pull guard? Wrestle up? Hand fight for control? This phase is the art of managing that initial chaos.
Mastering this means you're not randomly falling into bad positions — you're choosing how the fight begins.

3 WAYS A MATCH STARTS

Start with Confidence, Train with Purpose

BOTH STANDING

→ For players who prefer wrestling or takedowns.
– Grip fighting
– Level changes
– Shot entries

SEATED / STANDING

→ The most common NoGi start.
– Sitting guard with grips
– Threaten sweeps or wrestle up
– Balance between passive/active guards

SEATED / KNEELING

→ A controlled start used in many gyms.
– Start kneeling or seated to remove takedown risks
– Focus on frames and grip connection right away
